One of freewatt’s main specialities is the design and installation of bespoke one-off solar photovoltaic systems. Freewatt are the UK’s most experienced provider of solar PV systems on historic buildings. The two largest solar PV installations in the UK on listed buildings were installed by Freewatt. Both buildings were also Grade 1 listed:

  • St Denys’ Church, Sleaford, Lincolnshire dating back to 1180
  • All Saints Church, Wing, Buckinghamshire, a 10th Century Saxon church.

Working on sensitive buildings can pose tough challenges that we are experienced at overcoming. We frequently work with and help to coordinate local councils, diocesan committees, parish councils, English Heritage and grant funding bodies.

Freewatt have developed unique mounting systems for the installation of solar PV systems specifically on ancient buildings. The sympathetic nature of the fixings have gained the approval of English Heritage on several sites across the country.

Working on these ancient buildings carries a great responsibility that we embrace and carry through every step of the installation process. From initial consultation and design to the final installation and ongoing support.

It is very important to note that all of our bespoke systems have been fully BRE approved specifically for the method in which they are used. They meet rigorous building regulations and insurance standards. Other adapted methods for mainstream standard buildings are not usually fit for purpose.

Many of our church and community customers are motivated by the desire to reduce carbon output. We design our systems specifically to meet the best-practice guidelines laid out in many carbon reduction initiatives; particularly the Church of England’s ‘Shrinking The Footprint’ initiative. In support of these initiatives we can design and supply on-site energy monitoring equipment, information display boards and energy data export that can be shared with local schools and the wider community.

We are also able to advise on providing finance for some installations.
